Classic Oreshki with Dulce de Leche

Oreshki are the walnut shaped shortbread shells filled with boiled condensed milk, pressed in a cast iron mould that every household in the Soviet Union seemed to own. They are one of the most requested things on this site and one of the few that genuinely cannot be bought anywhere else in London.

How they are made

• Shortbread dough pressed into a walnut shaped mould and baked
• Shells filled with dulce de leche, the caramelised condensed milk known as varyonaya sgushchonka
• Two halves joined so they look like whole nuts

Who orders them

Anyone who grew up in Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Kazakhstan or the Baltics, usually in some quantity, usually for a birthday or New Year. If you have never had one, they are sweet and rich and best in twos rather than sixes.

At least 48 hours notice, because each shell is filled and joined by hand. Made in Belgravia and delivered across London and Surrey.
